Aripiprazole
Aripiprazole is an anti-psychotic drug and dopamine receptor agonist used in the treatment of schizophrenia. It is a quinoline derivative. The brand name of aripiprazole is Abilify and Abilitate Aripiprazole, an odorless, white to off-white crystalline powder, which is insoluble in water and soluble in dichloromethane, ethanol, etc. The molecular weight of aripiprazole is 448.4 gm/mol.

The IUPAC name of aripiprazole is,7-[4-[4-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)piperazine-1-yl]butoxy]-3,4-dihydro-1H-quinolin-2-one.

Mechanism of action:
The mechanism of action of aripiprazole is different from other ant-psychotic drugs. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown. It is a dopamineD2 and serotonin 5HT1A agonist and serotonin 5HT2A receptor antagonist. Dopamine and serotonin is a neurotransmitter present in the brain that, helps in the transfer of signal from one neuron to another neuron. So aripiprazole affects this transmission of signals in the brain.
Uses:
It is used in the treatment of,
- Schizophrenia.
- Manic depressive illness.
- Major depressive disorder.
- Sometimes it is used as sleeping pills.
- Tourette syndrome(In children).
Side-effects:
The overdose of aripiprazole shows different types of side effects like,
- Nausea.
- Vomiting.
- Rapid weight gain.
- Constipation.
- Headache.
- Dizziness.
- Lightheadedness.
