 5 Medicine Not Used in Pregnancy

Some medicines are not prescribed for pregnant women because they show lots of serious side effects on the mother as well as the baby. Medicines like Ibuprofen, Warfarin, Fluconazole, Chloramphenicol, Sulfonamides, Clonazepam, Lorazepam, etc shows the harmful effect on pregnant women 

1. Ibuprofen:

It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that, is used to relieve pain and fever. It blocks the effect of prostaglandin which reduced pain. Prostaglandin is also responsible for blood circulation in the human body. In pregnant conditions, ibuprofen reduces the blood circulation of the mother as well as the baby. ibuprofen also increases the risk of Miscarriage, Low-level of amniotic fluid, Jaundice, Brain damage to the baby, etc.

2. Warfarin:

Warfarin is an anticoagulant that prevents blood clots in blood vessels. It blocks the effect of Vit-K which shows a very important role in the blood coagulation process. It causes Di Sala syndrome or Fetal Warfarin Syndrome in babies. Warfarin is also responsible for Nail hypoplasia, Scoliosis, Nasal bone hypoplasia, low body weight, and head size in babies.

3. Ciprofloxacin:

Ciprofloxacin is a second-generation fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent. The use of ciprofloxacin in pregnancy conditions affects the growth of babies. It increases the risk of spontaneous abortion, weak muscle, weak bone, etc. It causes nerve damage and joint pain in the mother's body.

4. Chloramphenicol:

Chloramphenicol is a Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic. It inhibits the protein synthesis of microorganisms. In pregnancy conditions, chloramphenicol is safe as an eye drop but in IV it is very harmful to the baby. Chloramphenicol is able to pass through the placenta. It is responsible for Gray Baby Syndrome. The symptoms of this syndrome are Skin discoloration, Abdominal distention, Hemodynamic collapse, etc. 

5. Sulfonamides:

Sulfonamides are synthetic antibiotics. It blocks the folic acid synthesis in microorganisms. Examples of sulfonamides are Para-amino Salicylic acid, Sulfapyridine, Sulphadiazine, etc. It causes jaundice in newborns and increases the Chance of Miscarriage.
