Mechanism of action:

Clopidogrel belongs to a class of drugs known as antiplatelet drugs. Pallets are tiny cell fragments in the blood that play a pivotal role in clot formation. When an injury occurs in the blood vessels, platelets rush to the site to form a plug and prevent excessive bleeding. Sometimes, platelets can aggregate abnormally and lead to the formation of harmful blood clots. These antiplatelet drugs inhibit platelet aggregation. It irreversibly blocks the P2Y12 type of purinergic receptor on the surface of the platelets. It decreases cAMP and inhibits adenyl cyclase, which reduces platelet aggregation.

Uses:

  1. One of the primary uses of this is the prevention of cardiovascular events. It is prescribed to individuals who have experienced heart attacks, strokes, or peripheral arterial disease.
  2. It is often administered to individuals who have undergone coronary stent implementation procedure

Side-effects:

While clopidogrel is generally well-tolerated, like all antiplatelets, it can cause side effects. Some common side effects may include:
