 Amlodipine

Amlodipine is a long-acting second-generation calcium channel blocker. it is a peripheral arterial vasodilator. It is used in the treatment of hypertension. The molecular weight of amlodipine is 408.9 gm/mol. It is a white crystalline solid, slightly soluble in water and 2-propanol and freely soluble in methanol. It is also known as, Amlocard, Amdepin, pelmet, Lipinox, Caduet, Istin, Amlor, Amlodipinum, etc.

Structure:

The molecular formula of amlodipin is, C20H25ClN2O5


The IUPAC name of amlodipin is, 3-O-ethyl-5-O-methyl-2-(2-aminoethoxymethyl)-4-(2-chlorophenyl)-6-methyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate.

Mechanism of action:

Amlodipine is a peripheral atrial vasodilator. it inhibits the contraction of cardiac muscle and vascular smooth muscle by inhibiting the movements of calcium ions into cardiac muscle and vascular smooth muscle due to the inhibition, the peripheral vascular resistance is reduced, which lowers the blood pressure. Due to the reduction of peripheral vascular resistance, the heart rate remains stable.  

Uses:

It is used in the treatment of High blood pressure(hypertension), Stable and vasospastic angina, and Coronary artery disorder.

Side-effects:

The overdose of amlodipine shows different types of side effects like,
  1. Weakness.
  2. Headache.
  3. Flushing.
  4. Dizziness.
  5. Constipation.
  6. Fainting.
