Eflornithine
Eflornithine is an antiprotozoal drug, which is used in the treatment of facial hirsutism ( excessive hair growth on face in woman). It is prescription drug, the World Health Organisation (WHO) added this medicine in 2009. It is a creamy formulation. The molecular weight of eflornithine is 182.1 gm/mol. The brand name of eflornithine is, Vaniqua. It is also known as, Eflornithine hydrochloride, DFMO, DFMO HCl etc.
Structure:
The molecular formula of eflornithine is, [C6H12ClF2N2O2] .
The IUPAC name of eflornithine is, 2,5-diamino-2-(difluromethyl)pentanoic acid .
Synthesis:
Eflornithine is binds with Ornithine Decarboxylase (ODC) and inhibiting anagen phase of hair production. That prevents the natural substrate ornithine from accesing the active site.
Uses:
It is used in the treatment of excessive hair growth on face and body in woman (Facial Hirsutism).
Side-effects:
The overdose of eflornithine shows different types of side-effects like,
